The picture to the far left is the view from the Beach Homes' lanai.
The pristine black sand beach is literally a 'stone's throw' away...
Accommodating up to 3 couples with King bed in the Master bedroom, and 2 other bedrooms, each with Queen beds. If you need to accommodate a few more, contact James Dahlberg to make your arrangements.

Amenities:
These two beach houses, which are well known to people who visit the Big Island's famous Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, are Gambrell designed, Lindall cedar homes. They are built eight feet off the ground to take advantage of the gentle ocean breezes and the stunning views.

The large home has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and a large living room with sweeping views of the beach and bay. A lanai (porch) spans the front of the house with staircases leading down to two acres of manicured lawn shaded by a bounty of coconut trees marching majestically to the very shore of the Bay.

The smaller cottage is a one bedroom with full bath, living room and a convenient "mini-kitchen". A cozy retreat for a romantic, honeymoon or vacation!

The Beach Cottage and Beach Home are both fully furnished, including dishes, cookware, linens, satellite tv (in large home only), and all the accessories needed to make your stay comfortable and worry-free!

Directions:

Punalu'u Black Sands Beach is approximately 60 miles from both Kailua and Hilo.

From Kailua-Kona - take Route 11 South in the direction of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ("Volcano" on the road signs). Approximately 5 miles after passing through the town of Na'alehu, turn right at the Punalu'u Black Sands Beach sign. Follow the road 1.1 miles, passing the beach pavilion on the right - stay on the paved road bearing to the left, do not take the road that parallels the beach. After 1.1 miles, turn right onto the unpaved driveway; this leads directly to both the cottage and main beach house.

From Hilo - take Route 11 South in the direction of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ("Volcano"on the road signs). Approximately 5 miles after passing the turn-off to the town of Pahala, turn left at the Punalu'u Park sign. Follow the road 1 mile down to the bottom of the hill. Just after the road bears right, turn left onto the unpaved driveway. This leads directly into both the cottage and main beach house.

About Punalu'u:
Punalu'u (pronounced: 'poo-nah-loo-oo') Bay is known for its beautiful black sand beach located on the Big Island of Hawaii. Punalu'u got its name from the fresh water springs in the bay where Hawaiians dove with gourds to the ocean floor to tap the springs. Rare and endangered green sea turtles frequent the beach and may even swim side by side with you as you play in the clear waters.
The sea turtles attract visitors each day from around the island, and around the world!
Beachcomb the sparkling black sands for rare olivine crystals and shells, or simply enjoy the warm tropical sunshine while working on your tan.

There are ancient Hawai'ian Heiau (Stone Temples) at each end of the Bay, and numerous hiking trails and opportunities for discovery. Secluded and quiet, this is the perfect getaway spot for a honeymoon or a family vacation - including fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving in the crystal clear waters of the Bay. Whether your passion is the ocean, the mountains or the green forests, all are within easy reach of Punalu'u. Join us on your next vacation, and discover a magical side of Hawai'i that is seldom experienced by visitors!

Nearby Activities:

  • Seamountain Golf Resort, with its 18 hole golf course, lies across the road. Punalu'u Park, a county park, is a short walk nearby.
  • Driving south you will reach Southpoint, a popular attraction where Hawaii's only green sand beach is found. It is thought that the first Polynesian settlers of the island landed near the boat ramp.
  • Twenty minutes to the northeast is the small town of Na'alehu,"The Southernmost Town in the USA", where the famous Punalu'u Sweetbread Bakery is located. Their breads and rolls, plus ice cream, pastries and sandwiches are served in their gift shop, along with Kona coffee of course! The charming little Hana Hou restaurant, especially noted for their homemade pies, is in Na'alehu as well.
  • Thirty minutes to the north is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with its fascinating museum, great art center, walking trails, and historic hotel - and live Kilauea volcano! There are lava flows visible nearly always, though a hike may be in order to get to them. Check at the Visitor's Center for current activity.
  • Punalu'u Bay is equidistant from both Hilo (the largest city on the Big Island and the seat of the County government) and Kailua-Kona (the main resort town on the west side of the island). From ancient times this area has been called the "Playground of the Ali'i" ("ah-lee-ee" = Hawaiian Royalty). Come find out what the Hawai'ians have always known...
